Staying on top in today's competitive market requires careful attention to both candidate experience and employee satisfaction. From monitoring and responding to employee reviews to managing the expectations of candidates during interviews, here are the top five things you should avoid doing to maintain your company's talent-attracting image:
1. Don't post jobs and forget about them. If you post a role and receive an overwhelming number of applicants, put the role on hold after reaching a certain threshold. Reach out to all applicants to let them know their applications have been received and that you'll need time to review them. Provide a timeline for when they can expect to hear back. Keep candidates in the loop and set clear expectations from the start.
2. Don't use multiple recruiters to fill a single role, or platforms that operate this way. Top-performing candidates are frequently contacted by your competitors about new opportunities. Having multiple recruiters target the same candidates from the same companies can give the perception of desperation, disorganization, or chaos. Instead of focusing on volume, prioritize quality in your recruiting process.
3. Don't post a job without information about your company, the role, or the compensation range. The best job descriptions cover all bases—assume that candidates don't have another window open with your website or LinkedIn Company page. Provide information about what your company does and why employees enjoy working there. Explain the role and responsibilities clearly, and share as much detail as you can about expectations and compensation range. This saves time for both you and your candidates.
4. Don't post a job without understanding how to use the ATS or job board. If you're a lean team just starting out, especially if you're posting on LinkedIn, this isn't an easy task. Managing thousands of applicants without a streamlined system is incredibly time-consuming. Research this and ask for help before posting a job.
5. Don't create posts saying "I'm hiring, here are the requirements, comment if interested" without a formal job post. You may have a great product and a unique, inclusive culture that people want to work for. But simply posting that you're hiring and letting people comment can resemble a "cattle call" in acting—it may draw attention, but it's not a fair or efficient process. Elevate your brand with a formal job posting or have an expert conduct a confidential search
